Seven-day Japan itinerary through Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka

If you have one week in Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka make one of the easiest first-time routes. You get modern city life, traditional neighborhoods, temples, excellent food and a straightforward high-speed rail connection between destinations.

The biggest mistake on a seven-day trip is trying to add too many side trips. Keep the route focused and treat travel time as part of the itinerary rather than something to squeeze between attractions.

7-day route at a glance

  • Days 1–3: Tokyo
  • Days 4–5: Kyoto
  • Days 6–7: Osaka

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo

Keep your first day deliberately light. Check in, recover from the flight and explore your immediate neighborhood. If you still have energy, visit Asakusa and Senso-ji, then enjoy a simple dinner close to your hotel.

Day 2: Tokyo highlights

Start around Meiji Jingu and Harajuku before moving to Shibuya. Spend the late afternoon and evening in Shinjuku, where shopping, restaurants and city views can fill the rest of the day without another long transfer.

Day 3: Choose your Tokyo theme

Use your third day to personalize the trip. Traditional travelers can explore Ueno, Yanaka or Asakusa. Shoppers can focus on Ginza, Shibuya or Shinjuku. Anime and pop-culture fans can choose Akihabara or Ikebukuro, while food lovers can build the day around markets and neighborhood restaurants.

Days 4–5: Kyoto

Take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto in the morning. After checking in, concentrate on Higashiyama, Kiyomizu-dera and Gion. Start Day 5 early at Fushimi Inari, then continue to another Kyoto area such as Arashiyama if your energy and schedule allow.

Kyoto rewards early starts. Famous sites become much busier later in the morning, so a little planning can make the same attractions feel dramatically more comfortable.

Days 6–7: Osaka

Travel to Osaka and base yourself around Namba if convenience is your priority. Spend the first evening around Dotonbori and the surrounding food streets. On Day 7, choose Osaka Castle, Umeda, Kuromon Market or additional shopping before departure.

How to handle the train journey

For a seven-day route, simplicity matters. Use an IC card for local transportation and buy the Tokyo-to-Kyoto Shinkansen ticket according to your actual travel date. From Kyoto, Osaka is close enough that the move does not need to consume a full travel day.

Where to stay

In Tokyo, stay close to a convenient station. In Kyoto, Kyoto Station is practical for transport while central areas are better for evening walks and dining. In Osaka, Namba offers an easy combination of transport, restaurants and nightlife.

Compare general Japan accommodation options for your travel dates, then confirm each property’s city and neighborhood before booking.

Is seven days enough?

Yes, but only if you accept a fast pace. Seven days works best as a highlights trip: keep Tokyo and Kyoto as the priorities, treat Osaka as a shorter stop, and avoid adding distant side trips. If you want slower neighborhoods, multiple day trips or fewer hotel changes, move up to a 10-day itinerary.
